Tangled Bests Harry Potter

Disney's animated epic, Tangled, beat out the kid from Hogwarts this weekend, as Harry Potter 7 Part 1 slipped to second place. This is good news for Disney, even though the newest report for Tangled puts it's budget at $260 million, making it the most expensive animated film to date (I think this is even more than Avatar).

The only new wide released movie to open this weekend, The Warriors Way made a dismal $3 million against it's reported $42 million budget.

Harry Potter Gets unTangled this Thanksgiving Weekend

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of the Phoenix Goblet... which one is this? Let's just say Harry Potter 7 part 1 remained number one at the box office this Thanksgiving weekend with just above $50 million, while Disney's animated flick, Tangled, debuted with a hefty $49 million. With Tron Legacy still coming out, it looks like another big year for Disney, despite the Bruckheimer busts (Prince of Persia, The Sorcerer's Apprentice) this past Summer.

The other new movies, Burlesque, Love and Other Drugs, and Faster, debuted in mediocre fashion with $11.8 million, $9.9 million, and $8.7 million respectively.

Biggest Harry Potter Weekend Ever

Yes... Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 managed to bank about $125 million this opening weekend, making it the biggest debut for a Harry Potter movie. Although $125 million is huge, it's not a record, as it stands behind this year's Iron Man 2 ($128 million) and four other movies, including record holder The Dark Knight ($158 million).

Megmind Stops an Unstoppable Train

The animated family film Megamind, easily stopped an Unstoppable train dead in it's tracks. As for Skyline and Morning Glory, they fizzled a bit, even though Skyline's reported budget is only $10 million (really? then it is pretty good effects for a $10 million film).

Megamind and Due Date Relieve Box Office

All three newcomers, Megamind, Due Date, and For Colored Girls Only made a nice chunk of change this weekend (coming in at one, two, and three) helping the rather lull Fall box office.

Saw 3D saw a huge 60% drop to 5th place from last weekend's top spot. And I am rather surprised Red is holding on pretty strong, only dropping less than 20% this weekend to capture 4th place.

Saw 3D Slices up Halloween Weekend

The final chapter in the Saw series, Saw 3D, managed to scare up enough tickets for a first place finish this Halloween weekend at the box office. Although it managed to make less than Saw 2, 3, 4 or 5, Saw 3D did easily surpassed Saw 6's $14 million... partially due to the fact that this is the Final Saw and it's in "mind blowing" 3D.

Paranormal Activity 2 Scares away the Competition

Paranormal Activity 2 easily spooked away the competition this weekend before Halloween, with just over $40 million. Although, It did have a huge drop from Friday to Sunday. Whatever the case, this movie is already a success as the budget is said to be $3 million. Cha-ching!

Jackass 3D had an expected big drop (nearly 60%) from last weekend to finish in second place, with just over $20 million.

Jackass 3D's Huge Opening Weekend

Those guys at Jackass must be making a whole lot of money, since their newest film, Jackass 3D raked in about $50 million this weekend... Yes, $50 million... "Hey kids, you don't have to get an education, just do insanely dumb stunts and people will give you millions for it." --- some bitter person.

Anyways, Jackass 3D now has the record for biggest opening weekend in October, beating that other amazing movie, Scary Movie 3's $48.1 million.

The Social Network Finds new Friends in Second Week

David Fincher's Facebook drama, The Social Network, held on to the top spot this weekend at the box office, beating newcomers, "there's-no-other-Rom-Com-playing-so-let's-see-this-one," Life as We Know It and the Seabiscuit wannabe, Secretariat.

This second week statistics bodes well for the Oscar buzzed Social Network as it only dropped 30 percent from last weekend, and may continue raking in more box office moolah.

The Social Network Goes Live At the Box Office

David Fincher's The Social Network easily took the top spot this weekend at the box office with $23 million (Although a bit a lower than anticipated). Expect this film to stay around for awhile as it garners Oscar buzz and major critical acclaim.

Other newcomers, Renee Zellweger's Case 39 and Let the Right One in remake, Let Me In ranked in 7th and 8th respectively, with nearly $5.3 million each.--- which is pretty lame in my book, especially for Let Me In, which has great reviews (but then again I've already seen this movie, just in Swedish).

As for that failing Owl movie, Legend of the Guardians, it managed to drop only 30% this weekend to $10.9 million. It still has ways to go before it recoups its $80 million budget.

Resident Evil Scares Away Weak Competition

Milla Jovovich's 4th installment of the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil: Afterlife, easily slapped some zombies on this weak September weekend, with over $27 million. Maybe the critically bad 3D helped?

In other news, Toy Story 3 became the highest grossing picture of the year (worldwide) during the week, surpassing Alice In Wonderland's $1.02 billion... yes they are both Disney movies too. Cha-ching!!!

Last Exorcism overtakes Takers for Top Spot at the Box Office... Not!!!

In a "who cares what movies are playing this weekend" weekend, The Last Exorcism managed to sneak past other newcomer, Takers for a photo finish ($21.3 million vs $21 million respectively). Although final tallies wont be available till Monday, The Last Exorcism is already a hit, since it only cost about $1.8 million to make.

The Expendables slipped to third place, pulling in just over $9 million. Avatar: Special Edition, managed a nice $4 million, continuing to raking up more box office records.

Another record breaker, Toy Story 3, managed to break past the $1 billion mark worldwide, this past week and is now the only animated movie to do so. It is also the second movie this year to break that barrier, behind Disney's other movie, Alice in Wonderland. Hrmm... I guess Disney is doing pretty well this year, despite those Jerry Bruckheimer disappointments...

Update: Takers takes final lead over The Last Exorcism.

Expendables Tops Second Weekend

Stallone's action flick, The Expendables, easily held off weak, new competition in it's second weekend of release with over $16 million. In a crap shoot of newcomers, Vampires Suck was the highest of the week, just edging out Julia Robert's Eat Pray Love, for second place with about $12.2 million.

Piranha 3D, Nanny Mcphee Returns, and The Switch ranked right outside of the top 5 (6,7, and 8 perspectively). While Scott Pilgrim vs. The World continues its disappointment, dropping over 50% this weekend despite it's positive reviews.

Julia Robert's Eat, Pray, Love, debuted in second with about $23 million. While Michael Cera's comic book adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World took fifth place with about $10 million.

In other new Toy Story 3 broke the $400 million mark this weekend, making it the first movie this year to past that barrier.

Why it might be a hit: Has that kitsch web audience.
Why it might tank: Everyone else doesn't get it.

The Other Guys Step Up the Box Office

Will Ferrell's and Mark Wahlberg's The Other Guys easily topped the box office this weekend with just over $35 million, easily beating Inception's fourth weekend.

Despite it's 3D unveiling, Step Up 3D debuted in third place, and also third overall in the Step Up franchise with just over $15 million.

Inception Dreams up a Third Weekend

Inception claimed the top spot at the box office with over $27 million, this past weekend. Newcomer, Dinner for Schmucks, had to settle for second with about $23 million. While, Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, bombed with a paltry $12.5 million against its reported $85 million budget.

Zac Efron's Charlie St. Cloud managed to rank just behind Cats and Dogs with a little over $12 million, and with its terrible reviews, it will probably vanquish quickly from the box office.

Inception shakes up some Salt Over the Weekend

Christopher Nolan's Inception managed to remain in the number one spot for the second weekend in a role with about $43 million, easily handling Angelina Jolie's Salt to the shakers. Inception is one of the few big budget Hollywood films in years' past to only drop about 30% from opening weekend, namely because of strong word of mouth.

As for Salt, even though it came in second, it still managed a decent $36 million. However, this is not as big as Angelina Jolie's previous big budget action movie openings: Wanted ($50.9 million) and Mr. & Mrs. Smith ($50.3 million).

Why it might be a hit: Angelina Jolie action movies tend to do well, no matter if they were kind of fun (Mr. & Mrs Smith $478 million worldwide), okay (Wanted - $341 million worldwide(although she's not the main character)), or bad (Tomb Raider $275 million worldwide).
Why it might tank: Salt seems like it belongs in the blah category. Especially, with Inception scoring the "coolness factor" also in theaters.

Ramona and Beezus
Why it might be a hit: I'm sure it didn't cost that much.
Why it might tank: I haven't seen any marketing for this movie, but then again I don't watch the Disney channel all day.

Despicable Me: $19 million
