Harry Potter Gets unTangled this Thanksgiving Weekend

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of the Phoenix Goblet... which one is this? Let's just say Harry Potter 7 part 1 remained number one at the box office this Thanksgiving weekend with just above $50 million, while Disney's animated flick, Tangled, debuted with a hefty $49 million. With Tron Legacy still coming out, it looks like another big year for Disney, despite the Bruckheimer busts (Prince of Persia, The Sorcerer's Apprentice) this past Summer.

The other new movies, Burlesque, Love and Other Drugs, and Faster, debuted in mediocre fashion with $11.8 million, $9.9 million, and $8.7 million respectively.

Weekend Estimates:
  1. Harry Potter 7 Part 1: $50.3 million ($220.4 million total) Budget: $250 million
  2. Tangled: $49.1 million ($69 million total) Budget: $80 million
  3. Megamind: $12.9 million ($130.5 million total) Budget: $130 million
  4. Burlesque: $11.8 million ($17.2 million total) Budget: $55 million
  5. Unstoppable: $11.8 million ($60.7 million total) Budget: $100 million

----previous post
A bunch of new movies open this Thanksgiving Weekend, each trying to steal some of Harry Potter's magic.

Tangled

Flop Factor: 30%
Hit: Even though it's not Pixar, Disney 3D animation seems to fare well. Plus, a current 88% on rottentomatoes is always a good sign.
Flop: Not Pixar

Burlesque

Flop Factor: 50%
Hit: Cher has her fans.
Flop: Seems like a last minute movie idea they threw together... "Wouldn't it be cool if?"

Faster
Flop Factor: 60%
Hit: The Rock taking revenge.
Flop: The movie seems to take itself too seriously.

Love and Other Drugs

Flop Factor: 40%
Hit: no other romantic comedies out now.
Flop: Reviews are mediocre at best.

My Predictions
Harry Potter 7 Part 1: $60 million
Tangled: $33 million
Burlesque: $16 million
Love and Other Drugs: $14 million
Megamind: $9 million
