Zombie's attack the Box Office

Woody Harrelson's zombie fightin' Zombieland, easily took the top spot this weekend with about $25 million, just north of it's reported $24 million budget.

Meanwhile, Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story headed into wider release, tying with Drew Barrymore's Whip it for a 6th and 7th place finish with just under $5 million (final tally will be known on Monday).

It is now safe to say that Bruce Willis' Surrogates will have a very tough time recouping its reported $80 million budget back after only making $26 million in two weeks. This also holds true for that other sci-fi movie, Pandorum whose budget is reported to be $40 million, but so far has made less than $8 million and dropping out of the box office quickly.

Weekend Estimates:
Zombieland: $25 million ($25 million total)
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: $16.7 million ($82.4 million total)
Toy Story / Toy Story 2 (3D): $12.5 million ($12.5 million total)
The Invention of Lying: $7.4 million ($7.4 million total)
Surrogates: $7.3 million ($26.4 million total)
----
A slew of new movies opens this first weekend in October. Let's get to it.

Zombieland
Why it might be a hit: Hell yeah, Shaun of the Dead here we go.
Why it might tank: Might be too intelli-niche for the average movie-goer.

The Invention of Lying
Why it might be a hit: Ricky Gervais is quite funny and the concept is great.
Why it might tank: Seems more like something I'd want to rent than see in theaters.

Whip It
Why it might be a hit: Kinda going for that Juno-esque momentum and conveniently stars Ellen Page.
Why it might tank: Needs strong word of mouth or will get lost in the shuffle.

Toy Story and Toy Story 2 3D
Why it might be a hit: Toy Story in 3D, come on. You already know it's good.
Why it might tank: It's a double feature, and most of us have seen this movie a billion times.

My Predictions:
Zombieland: $27 million
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: $16 million
Toy Story & Toy Story 2 3D: $11 million
The Invention of Lying: $9 million
Surrogates: $8 million
