District 9 Invades the Weekend

District 9 took the top spot this weekend raking in about $37 million. The Peter Jackson produced film provided a nice box office boost in the late summer.

Weekend Estimates:
District 9: $37 million ($37 million total)
G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra: $22.5 million ($98.8 million total)
The Time Traveler's Wife: $19.2 million ($19.2 million total)
Julie & Julia: $12.4 million ($43.7 million total)
G-Force: $6.9 million ($99 million total)

-----
It's getting to that part of August where Hollywood starts dumping random movies in theaters. Now, I'm not saying that any of these movies are like that, but there are five new openings this weekend.

The Time Traveler's Wife
Why it might be a hit: Based off of a pretty popular novel.
Why it might tank: Although the idea sounds interesting, the trailer doesn't look all that great.

District 9
Why it might be a hit: So far, getting some of the best reviews of the summer.
Why it might tank: Doesn't have as wide of an appeal as another similar movie, Cloverfield.

Bandslam
Why it might be a hit: New Twilight: New Moon trailer attached.
Why it might tank: Are Twilight fans that hardcore?

Other movies opening, Ponyo and The Goods, Live Hard, Sell Hard.

My Predictions:
District 9: $31 million
G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra: $26 million
The Time Traveler's Wife: $15 million
Julie and Julia: $12 million
Bandslam: $8 million
