Transformers Edges out Ice Age

In a very close match, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen reclaimed the weekend with a little over $42 million while Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs took in just under $42 million. Phew... that's close, it was tied as of yesterdays estimates.

Meanwhile, Public Enemies got a pretty decent debut for third place with $25 million.

Transformers 2 is now the highest grossing film of the year with nearly $300 million in two weeks. And The Hangover has now passed the $200 million mark.

Weekend Results:
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: $42.3 million ($293.4 million total)
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: $41.6 million ($66.7 million total)
Public Enemies: $25.3 million ($40.1 million total)
The Proposal: $12.9 million ($94.3 million total)
The Hangover: $11.3 million ($205 million total)

---------
It's going to be tough pickins to dethrone last weekend's huge opener for Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. However, since it is Fourth of July Weekend, expect some heavy hitters from Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Public Enemies.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
What it has going for it: Third in a successful family series where the second one made $68 million on opening weekend. Also, with Pixar's Up having been in theaters for a while, families are anxious to take their kids to something new.
What it has to work against: Mediocre reviews at best.

Public Enemies
What it has going for it: Star Power: Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in a period gangster film.
What it has to work against: Being released in the wake of Transformers may not bode well. This looks like it should be released in the Fall season.

My Predictions:
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: $67 million
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: $55 million
Public Enemies: $23 million
The Hangover: $10 million
The Proposal: $9 million
