Shrek Trumps Memorial Day Weekend

A couple of big-budgeted newcomers could not dethrone the 4th Green Ogre flick this Holiday weekend. Of course, holiday weekends usually mean great business for family films. I guess every box office analyst was terribly off prediction this weekend.

Perhaps the terrible reviews of Sex and the City 2 did sink in and prove that not every movie is critic proof. The $32 million debut of the female foursome's second adventure is considerably less than the $56.8 million opening of the first film. Prince of Persia had a modest (but not so grand) opening too; it will have to do extremely well overseas for it to see any profit against it's reported $200 million budget.

Weekend Estimates:
  1. Shrek Forever After: $43.3 million ($133.1 million total) Budget: $165 million
  2. Sex and the City 2: $32.1 million ($46.3 million total) Budget: $100 million
  3. Prince of Persia: $30.2 million ($30.2 million total) Budget: $200 million
  4. Iron Man 2: $16 million ($274.6 million total) Budget:$200 million
  5. Robin Hood: $10.3 million ($83 million total) Budget: $200 million
Previous post-----
A couple of new movies hit theaters this Memorial Day weekend, both apparently dealing with the desert.

Prince of Persia
Why it might be a hit: Lots of visual effects. It's like The Mummy meets Pirates of the Caribbean.
Why it might tank: I can imagine Hollywood lameos sitting around a table pitching "it's like The Mummy meets Pirates of the Caribbean."

Sex and the City 2
Why it might be a hit: The often ignored female audience will be in full force here.
Why it might tank: An 11% on rottentomatoes so far... That's not good.

My Predictions:
Sex and the City 2: $70 million
Prince of Persia: $50 million
Shrek Forever After: $38 million
Iron Man 2: $14 million
Robin Hood: $10 million
