Avatar Flies Past the Billion Dollar Mark

Happy New Year! And you know who is having a great one? Well, none other than 20th Century Fox and James Cameron, as Avatar easily lead the box office this weekend, helping it's worldwide gross pass the billion dollar mark. This makes James Cameron the only director to have two movies that have made over a billion dollars. It now looks like it will give his other movie, Titanic, which has grossed about $1.8 billion worldwide, some competition for the number one spot of all time.

Lots of Avatar's success could be due to the higher ticket prices for its 3D screenings, which accounts for about 75% of the moolah domestically. With that fact in mind, Avatar also hasn't really tapered off like many of the other blockbusters in weeks after it's release.

Weekend Estimates:
Avatar: $68.3 million ($352.1 million total)
Sherlock Holmes: $38.4 million ($140.7 million total)
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel: $36.6 million ($157.3 million total)
It's Complicated: $18.7 million ($59.1 million total)
The Blind Side: $12.7 million ($209.1 million total)
-------
With no new wide releases this first of 2010 weekend, look for Avatar to continue its reign at the box office for a third week in a role. At the rate this movie is going, it would be kinda funny if it became the second highest grossing movie of all time, right behind James Cameron's other movie, that sinking ship film, I can't, for the life of me... remember the name.

My Predictions:
Avatar: $62 million
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel: $32 million
Sherlock Homes: $31 million
It's Complicated: $16 million
Up In the Air: $9 million
